Summary

To secure state-of-the-art and advanced technologies necessary for domestic development and production of weapon systems, KRIT is managing defense technologies across their overall cycle, including planning and managing core defense technology development programs.

Main Activities

  • Preplanning : At this comprehensive preliminary research stage for planning core technology projects, KRIT carries out specialized analysis and research, including predicting future advanced and innovative technologies, investigating the level of domestic and foreign technologies, analyzing weapon system technologies, and establishing defense science and technology roadmaps.
  • Project planning: Considering the result of preplanning, the project for core technology is decided using a top-down or bottom-up approach, and research for planning is conducted to materialize the decision.
  • Project management: After drafting and publishing a request for proposals for an industry-academia research-based core technology project, research management under the agreement for challenging R&D is conducted.
  • Precedent research: To support the decision of an efficient method for carrying out the weapon system acquisition program, in this step, KRIT conducts in-depth research on R&D possibility, technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, required time and resource, and the effect of defense industry development.

Carries out comprehensive preliminary research for project planning, including investigating predictions and relevant levels, analyzing weapon system technologies, and establishing defense science and technology roadmaps

  • pre-Work Breakdown Structure (pWBS) analysis approach

Pre-analyzes and researches the WBS, which handles the component composition of a unit weapon system in a tree structure at the technology planning stage where the concept of weapon system operation is not made

  • Technology Breakdown Structure (TBS) analysis approach

Analyzes and researches the technology components in a tree structure to meet the system capabilities for the weapon system of which the concept of operation is not redefined after a long-term operation

Investigation of the levels of each country’s defense science and technology
  • Defense Science and Technology Survey

This is a reference document for future weapon system requirements and R&D planning of core technologies, presenting the levels of domestic and foreign defense science and technology, weapon system/technology development status and development trend thereof, and newly required technologies in the future.

This provides the objective data necessary for establishing domestic R&D policies and strategies that are obtained through an investigation on the levels of defense science and technology of major countries leading in the defense industry and the technical levels in the weapon systems of each country, which are identified through research and analysis of the relative technology levels.

Presents mid- to long-term strategies and visions for defense R&D by identifying core technologies that require mid- to long-term R&D to achieve future defense goals and by establishing strategies to procure them effectively

Preparation of core defense technology plan
  • Preparation of defense science and technology roadmap

    Identifies core technologies for each significant functional part (WBS levels 3–4), such as component/assembly, and establishes a defense science and technology roadmap for each core technology package

    Specifies a list of future technology and challenging technology projects and prepares and provides a list of core technology projects reflecting the results of project planning

  • Project management

Conducts the management of projects for core technology development during their overall cycle in accordance with the policy for promoting the core technology development

Evaluation of the technology readiness assessment(TRA) of Force Improvement
Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) is a process that calculates the degree of readiness of core technologies applied to weapon systems by quantitative indicators through the accepted systematic assessment methods.

Defense Technology Community (DTC)

This community is responsible for the establishment of an open, top-down planning system to develop core technologies and the integration of defense R&D projects and national R&D projects.
